This coming weekend Gav & I will be doing some traveling, and while we like to keep things fairly healthy, sometimes a good fast food stop is necessary. Whether you’re on a road trip or at an airplane terminal, stopping by Mickey Dee’s or hitting up a Taco Bell drive through might be your only option.
I get it – and I’m not judging. I love me a good Baja Blast every now and again. Today I’m here to help and offer some pro-tips and ordering advice on how to make your fast food order a bit more health-conscious. There’s no reason your pit stop can’t be delicious and a little nutritious. Keep reading.
Your Best Options
The best order: Egg white and roasted red pepper Sous Vide Egg Bites and the Hearty Veggie & Brown Rice Salad Bowl.
Tip: You can always make a meal of their snack game: They’ve got Hippeas , fresh fruit, and toasted coconut chips.
Your best order: Plain brown rice & steamed veggies. If you’re a carnivore, you can also add grilled mandarin chicken.
Tip: Ask them not to add the sugar-filled sauce to the chicken, and instead top it with soy and chili sauce packets.
Your best order: A salad bowl – load up on the veggies, skip the cheese/sour cream, & add black beans. If you’re extra hungry, add brown rice.
Tip: Guac is not extra, if you skip the meat. 🙂
THE BEST BET: Any sandwich can be turned into a salad, we approach it like a straight-up salad bar and get lettuce, peppers, cucumbers, olive, onion, tomato, and avocado. Adding carved turkey will also give you that extra protein.
Tip: Skip the sugary dressing, and opt for the oil and vinegar.
Your best order: The half-size of the Power Mediterranean Chicken Salad which is loaded with grilled chicken, feta, and a blend of quinoa, chickpeas, white beans, roasted veggies, and sundried tomatoes. Can ask for it w/o chicken.
Tip: Skip the hummus/sauce that comes with it, and just get the balsamic vinaigrette packet.
Tricky, but doable
with the pico guacamole dressing, no cheese.
Tip: Go for a side of apple slices instead of fries.
Your best order: The veggie pizza with a gluten-free crust, which is thin and crispy.
Tip: Ask for no cheese, light cheese, or half of each.
Your best order: The black bean burrito or the power veggie bowl are both decent options if—you guessed it—you skip the cheese and sour cream.
Tip: You can pretty much substitute any meat on the menu for black beans, which are 100 percent vegan.
