Helloooooo friends and followers! Oh my goodness! Things have been so crazy lately and I can’t believe we are already half way through May! This year has been insanely busy for me with a lot of life-changing events going on so I apologize if I haven’t been very “present” on here. To be quite honest with you, change has not always been a friend of mine, but for some reason lately my perspective on change has, well…changed. I have come to believe that the best time for personal growth is during a time where you might feel unprepared or unsuspecting and that change can bring about some amazing and exciting new things. From here on out, lets all try to start welcoming change with open arms, shall we?…Okay, well at least let’s try!
Anyways, lets get into the good stuff. I will start by saying that I have always been a worker. I started working when I was 15 years old and have been working ever since. I’ve always felt so accomplished and excited to be able to buy my own things with my hard earned money. There’s really no feeling in the world quite like it. My first couple of jobs were in sales and retail, and from there I decided to go into hospitality. At one point, I was actually working 3 jobs at once (which was honestly too much for anyone in their right mind). Now I work for a Hedge Fund in Santa Monica and have been working here for a little over a year. I have always felt proud of my work and while it hasn’t been easy, I’m excited to tell you guys that I recently got promoted! YAY!
I had been seeking advice over the last couple months on how to be taken more seriously and how to show my team and my boss that I was ready to take on more responsibilities. I was grateful to have received some valuable tips that I’ve received from people I look up to immensely and I’m here to share them with you today. I know this isn’t one of my more fun beauty or fashion posts, but I truly hope that this post can help you on you professional journey as well and of course, if you have some great advice that you’ve received, please feel free to share it with me in the comments below!
1. Give 100% to your current position
If you’re anything like me, once the position you’ve been in seems to become second nature, it’s easy to grow stagnant. Try to remember that there is always room to grow and improve. Before you start thinking too much about the next step at work, reflect on where you are at and how well you are performing in your current role. How good are you at your job? Are you meeting the expectations? Are you consistent? When it comes to getting a promotion, you want to be confident that you have mastered your role and that your team and boss can see it too.
2. Make sure they know you love your job
At the beginning of any year, a common concern among employers is that once someone receives a promotion, they leave the company shortly after. Reiterate your commitment and the fact that you plan to stay with the company. I always like to thank my employer for the opportunity they have given me and tell them that I enjoy my position. Employers look for team members who want to grow with the business and once they realize you want that too, they will be more willing to compensate you for your hard work and dedication—whether that’s a raise or a promotion.
3. Take ownership
This is a piece of advice that I struggled with at first, mostly because I didn’t understand. When I say take ownership, here’s what I mean. Let’s say you are a manager at your firm and you’ve struggled with your team to find a process that works from the very beginning. Everyone, including your boss, recognizes that processes and communication are an issue. If you really want a promotion and want to prove to your higher ups that you are ready for the next step, take the time to create new internal documents that outline the entire process and how it can be improved. Next time your team discusses the issue, show off the work you’ve put in to try and combat the problem.
4. Don’t let your schedule control you
This was one of the hardest things for me to do as I am such a control freak and perfectionist. In the past, I’ve seen two major issues: people don’t know how to manage their time properly and they feel like when things don’t go as planned or surprises pop up (which they often do at work), their entire day is thrown off and they can’t get back on track. An employer won’t want to promote someone with this mentality. They’ll instead want to promote someone who is in charge of their schedule and in control—someone who prepares ahead of time so that when their day changes, they can easily get back on track. Also, make sure you don’t show your stress or wear it like a handbag.
5. Form relationships with your team and superiors
If you want to be promoted to a certain position, befriend someone at that same level; grab coffee with them, take an active interest in their day. What do they know that you don’t? What do they read that you don’t? What tasks are they doing that you might need to learn? Would they be willing to teach you on the side so that you are prepared? Think about it. When it’s time for promotions and your boss asks someone above you for their opinion, they might say, “Alyssa is great! She’s taken an active interest in my role, I know she’s interested.”
Again, these are some pieces of advice that I have received over the last few months and while they won’t guarantee you the raise or promotion you might be looking for, I honestly believe they can improve your day-to-day work flow – especially when it comes time for that year end review!
