Night Time Necessities

For me, the key to having an amazing day, is making sure you have an amazing night. And by that I mean an amazing night time regime. Here are a few of my night time necessities I use to help get a good nights sleep and ensure a great next morning!

Hydration

Water is so important and if you read my Fitness Routine post, you know that I drink about a gallon of water a day. Drinking water before bed does wonders for your body, especially your skin. Staying hydrated keeps your skin from looking dull and tired as well as preventing wrinkles. Drinking water also aids in flushing toxins out of your body and what better time to do that than while you sleep? I try to drink 17 – 32oz of water before bed, and while waking up to use the restroom in the middle of the night can be annoying, you will notice a difference in your skin and energy levels almost instantly.

Resurface by Shani Darden Retinol Reform

Speaking of wrinkle prevention – I’ve been using this product for almost a year now and it is seriously such a game changer. You may have seen me talk about it if you read my post about my skincare routine, but putting this on your skin before you sleep is life changing. Shani recommends using one to two pumps all over your entire face, neck, and décolletage one night a week and gradually adding another day until you are eventually using the product every night. I have dry skin, so adjusting to this took a little longer for me, but now I use it every night right before bed and see results right when I wake up.

Moisturize

Moisturizing your skin is KEY! Like I said, I have dry skin so I always make sure to moisturize right before bed. Since the retinol tends to be a little drying, I use PCA Hydrating Balm all over my face once the retinol has dried. This is one of the only balms that really keeps my skin hydrated all day.

I have been using Kiehl’s eye creams for years now and absolutely love them. My two favorite are the Avocado Eye Cream and the Midnight Recovery Concentrate (my new obsession). I cannot stress enough the importance of eye cream. The skin under your eyes is a lot thinner than the rest of your skin and wrinkles a lot faster. By keeping that skin moisturized, you can prevent signs of aging. I also always apply a lip balm while I’m sleeping for the same reason. The skin on your lips is thin and sensitive so it’s always good to add a little extra moisture to them while you sleep.

5-HTP

I have to give a shout out to my friend and hair stylist Laura who told me about these miracle pills. I SWEAR by them now and am so thankful that they were introduced to me. 5-HTP is a naturally occurring substance derived from a West African medicinal plant called Griffonia simplicifolia. 5-HTP works in the brain and central nervous system by increasing serotonin production. Serotonin has many important functions – including a role in sleep, appetite, memory, learning, temperature regulation, mood, sexual behavior, cardiovascular function, muscle contraction, and endocrine regulation. I take one pill every night right before bed and I noticed that I was sleeping better and all around happier and more energized almost immediately. Trust me – you’ll thank me later.

I always recommend talking with a doctor or physician before taking or using new products, but I hope this helped give you an insiders look to what works for me. What are your night time necessities?
